August Break :: August was . . .

. . . my third year to participate in the August Break
which really feels like play.

I so enjoy the treasure hunt and creativity of working with prompts,
looking back at the everyday moments captured over the past month,
and sharing the journey with others.

Thanks for tagging along!

Cultivating Enough :: Day 28 :: Time

Lookie who I found peeking out this afternoon!

Every day for the last little while,
I've been watching this special spot
in our monkey grass
right next to the mother oak
that holds up the left side of my porch swing,
waiting
for our delicate, purple crocuses
to say hello.

Smiling because I couldn't see them from our breezeway yesterday.

I guess this one decided
today
was the perfect day to yawn and stretch,
push thru the dried oak leaves
and bloom where she's planted...

just as she does every spring.

Mother Nature is a such a gentle teacher
on how there really is
a time
for every season
and no need to rush,
isn't she?

Receiving a Gorgeous Fall Photo

I recently finished the book, "Eyes of the Heart: Photography as a Christian Contemplative Practice" by Christine Valters Paintner, which I really enjoyed and would highly recommend. She has a *great* section on shadow, talking about how, both in photos and in ourselves, shadows give them/us interest and depth. And!! Not all shadows are "negative." Our "unclaimed *beauty*" is tucked away in our shadows, too, just waiting to be discovered. Love that *so* much! ♥

Fun fact? A warm smile spread when I saw that Liz Lamoreux's book, "Inner Excavation," is listed in the back as an additional resource!

Another of Christine's ideas that I was especially drawn to was an invitation to practice "receiving" a photo rather than "taking" one, meaning don't try to compose it or set one up, just look around and receive what's there. She explains that this practice helps encourage us to receive whatever we find when we look at ourselves, too.

When I came home from work today, it was a gorgeous, warm, early Fall afternoon - sparkling sunlight dappling thru the trees, just the right temperature with a slight breeze - so I sat outside in our back yard for about an hour. After enjoying a bowl of chilled applesauce with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey, I meditated ... just watching the trees and breathing.

When I finished, I saw this sweet little red leaf not too far away from me (it's still mostly green here), put my phone low to the ground not far from her and I received this beautiful photo.

First picture, no filters.

Glimpses of Fall's Grace

Our backyard this morning.
The dogwood has started her transformation.

This little lovely is usually one of the first
to finish dressing in her glorious, deep red dress.

(Thought it might be fun to take a photo each week
and watch her transformation.)

Such a blessing to find beautiful bits of Fall
tucked in the amidst this afternoon's waning sunshine
and green grass.

August Break 2015 :: Earth

Earth
dappled by sunlight
(my favorite!)
and a few leaves that have already turned.

5 Deep Breaths and Looking With Love

It's the last day of our month of
5 Deep Breaths.

Thought I'd add to it another practice:
Looking with Love

5 Deep Breaths Oceanside at Dusk

.     *     .

My darlin' and me.

Took us 10 wearisome hours
but we made it.

Usually it takes about 7
but we wound up sitting for a couple of hours
in bumper-to-bumper traffic
due to construction.

A Moment of Joy

A moment of Joy :: pure delight in finding
tender crocuses welcoming me home.

Quietly wise teachers
in patient resilience.

.        *         .

Even when inside these days,
I just breathe easier knowing these sweeties
are blooming right outside our door.

Spring *didn't* forget (to come)!!

Blessed be.

Thankful Tuesday

Today I am thankful for:

1.  Honoring a promise to myself to take the time to enjoy this Fall, my favorite time of year.
2.  And by doing so, grounding myself back in my one wild and precious life.
3.  Nourishing my spirit by attending daily Mass.
4.  Joyful, light-hearted exchanges while working with my new supervisor.
5.  Making time for rest.
6.  Yummy cream cheese pumpkin muffin and warm milk breakfast.
7.  Blessed, perfect timing of a conversation with a wise friend.
8.  Inspiration from watching Dancing With the Stars.
9.  Anticipation of seeing our dear littles this weekend.
10. Welcomed ease of "let it be."

Basking in Prairie Love

I took this photo on our last evening of our visit with my family in Texas a few days ago. Smiling softly because I hadn't really started my selfie practice until after our last visit there so it was important to me to intentionally take a few moments, sprinkled throughout our week there, to stop and breathe in the Texas prairie that is so much a part of (and home to) my heart.

I am delighted to say that I now have several selfies of me standing on the land that I love and what a gift that I can now look at them (((and remember))) anytime that I want and/or need to.

Dappled Morning Sunshine

I so love Spring (and Fall) when the
sunshine is gently dappled.

Such a blessing to take a moment

to breathe
and to be

before going on with my day.

Yes.

Standing Among My Roses

This special rosebush lives beside our mailbox and was a birthday present from my in-laws several years back.  When we first planted it the buds were yellow and, as the flowers unfolded, they would be yellow with barely-tinged red edges.  Now, as you can see, the flowers come in all red.

My father-in-law, who's thumb is *much* greener than my black one, says it's our soil content that encouraged our rosebush to become red.  He tells me the same thing happens with other plants and trees, too, like Japanese Maples.  The actual color of their flowers and leaves is determined by the soil they make their home in.

(hmmm... I believe there might be an interesting writing prompt in there somewhere...)

Smiling because I really like that my bush has metamorphosed this way.  "She" reminds me of my dear Grandma who cherished her red roses and often brought in a few flowers, putting them in water, so we (and she) could enjoy them on the inside, too.

Whenever I'm really missing my Grandma (usually around this time of year in May when roses bloom), I intentionally seek out rose-scented things - lotion, candles - to surround myself with trusting she's in there/here, too.  And, she adds with a soft smile, I've also been known to buy myself roses for my birthday in honor of my Grandma, my Moma and me.

I'm really drawn to the idea that roses are associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus, too.  I feel a deep closeness with her and am so grateful for her being my first introduction to a feminine face of God.  Something I've desperately needed in my faith journey.  But then, she says with a warm twinkle, you already knew that about me, didn't you?

A Beautiful May Day Morning

It was a beautiful Spring morning
this May Day.

So I paused,
took a breath
(or two),
sighed

and took a couple of photos.

(Love the wildness in this one.)

Happy May Day!
